What inflation rate should I use?
US long-term average is ~3%. The Fed targets 2%. Recent years (2021-2023) saw 5-9%. Use 2.5-3% for long-horizon planning unless you have a reason to differ.
Is CPI the same as inflation?
CPI (Consumer Price Index) is the most common measure of inflation for everyday goods, but does not perfectly match anyone's personal experience — housing, healthcare, and education often outpace CPI.
Does this use real historical CPI data?
No, it uses a flat rate you provide. For real CPI-indexed historical conversion, see official Bureau of Labor Statistics tools.
