Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between marginal and effective rate?

Marginal rate is the tax on your last dollar (the highest bracket you reach). Effective rate is total tax / total income (always lower than marginal because lower brackets pay less).

Does this include state tax?

No. State tax varies enormously (0% in TX/FL/WA; ~13% in CA top bracket). Add your state separately.

What about FICA (Social Security + Medicare)?

Not included here. FICA is 7.65% on the first $168,600 (2024), then 1.45% above. Self-employed pay double.

Itemize vs standard deduction?

Take whichever is larger. Standard deduction (2024): $14,600 single / $29,200 MFJ. Itemize if your mortgage interest + state taxes (capped $10k) + charity exceed those.
